What's new in July? 🌷It's Summer Time!

Insurance Tips for July:

1) Plan for Michigan’s severe storms (hail + wind + lightning)

• Check roof condition after any strong storms (missing/damaged shingles, loose flashing).

• If you’ve had hail or repeated minor roof leaks, consider a quick inspection—repairs now can prevent bigger water damage later.

• Review that you have Comprehensive coverage on auto (this is what typically applies to hail/wind damage).

2) Watch for basement and water damage (common in July)

Michigan can see sudden heavy rain and overflow.

• If you have a sump pump, test it and make sure you have a backup plan (battery backup if applicable).

• Check downspouts, gutters, grading, and whether water is pooling near your foundation.

• Important: Most “home” policies do not automatically cover flood. If you’re in a higher-risk area or want flood protection, ask about separate flood insurance (often through the NFIP/standalone flood policies).

3) Heat + power outages (food spoilage + electronics)

• July storms can knock out power—consider:

  • keeping freezers/fridges closed during outages

  • reviewing whether your policy includes food spoilage (usually under homeowners “perils,” with limits/conditions)

• If you have devices you’d replace quickly (computer, TV), ensure your coverage limits match reality (and take photos for documentation).

4) Auto insurance: mileage, road trips, and “no-fault” basics

In Michigan, the auto system includes No-Fault Personal Injury Protection (PIP).

• If you travel a lot, confirm you’re properly covered for non-employment driving, household members, and any new/changed vehicles.

• After policy renewal or life changes, review:

  • PIP/medical setup (and how it coordinates with your health insurance)

  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage

• If you drive with a teen/new driver or add a vehicle, update your policy right away.

5) July property risks: bikes, grills, and packages

• Store bicycles/gear securely (theft claims rise in summer).

• If you grill, confirm you have access to working safety equipment; small fire incidents can become expensive quickly.

• If you buy lots online, consider delivery options that reduce theft (or lockable delivery/secure location).
